Toenail Fungus
The most common area affected by mail fungus is the toenails. This is because the feet are usually covered with socks and shoes, which puts your feet in an environment conducive to fungus growth (dark, humid).
Here are some other reasons why toenail fungus is more common than finger nail fungus:
- any public or shared showers provide the perfet environment for fungus grwoth, and the spread of fungus to feet that are not covered.
- fungus in toenails is not usually detected as fast as fingernail fungus and therefore can spread to more than one toe before identified.
People who get toenail fungus usually notice a small white or yellow spot under the top of their nail. This is the fungus initial growth stage. Most people disregard this early symptom since there is no pain involved.
Soon the white or yellowish spot spreads and starts to turn the entire toenail a dark yellowish color (or sometimes light purpleish or dead white). Once the entire nail is discolored, it starts to thicken and somtimes crumble. In some cases, the nail itself can fall or crumble off entirely, and in rare cases the toenail is lost for good.
However its usually the unsightliness of the condition that prompts people to attempt to manage their nail fungus. Apart from chemical fungicides that can be harmful to you or your children, there are also many home remedies available for toe nail fungus.
